SPORTSWEAR FOR WOMEN WITH BURNING AMBITION

10 pieces of winter running kit all women runners should own

10 pieces of winter running kit all women runners should own

Our thoughts on the top 10 pieces of running kit all women should own to get through the Winter season.

1. Trainers - buy comfortable and durable running trainers. I always suggest going up a size, to allow extra room for your toe to push into the front of the shoe when you press down in the run movement, this will also help you keep your toe nails! It is always worth popping down to your local running shop so you can try running on a treadmill.

If you are a long runner I always suggest a pair of women's compression tights, these aid protection of muscles on the impact and also really help recovery. For the lower mileage runners, plain or mid-range leggings are perfect. I love the women's high waisted leggings for extra comfort.

3. Sports bra
- a decent, comfortable sports bra is a must. I always go with the ones with elastic around the bottom, this will stop it riding up. Also nothing tight underneath the arm pits, you don't want any chafing. If you are on the larger size then extra support is a must.

4. Top
- this is all weather depending. However always layer up, so you can take off layers as you get warmer. I suggest a short sleeve base layer then a long sleeve on top followed by a lightweight jacket. This way the coolest top is always the last one to be revealed.

5. Socks - a good pair of thin socks is a good investment. I always suggest getting some that go well up and over the top of the foot, this gives extra protecting from rubbing and also from injury.

7. Sports watch - you need to keep track of progress and train within your heart rate zones to maximise training. We suggest a Garmin as they tend to be multifunctional, reliable and accurate. Their customer service is 10/10, so if anything goes wrong they will aim to fix it.

8. Calf sleeves
- to get the winter mileage in there is no doubt you will be pounding the pavements. You need protection on your legs to prevent injury or shin splints. I suggest either the 2XU Compression calf guards, as they can also be used for triathlon as they don't take on water, or for a slightly softer feel and longer, in the leg, go for the 2XU Compression calf sleeves.

9. Music - for those long lonely miles you need some music. Did you know you can set a playlist on Spotify that plays music to your running rhythm? Try it, it's excellent.

10. Drink - finally always take a drink, especially if you are aiming to go over 5k. We swear by High5 protein/carb drink, this gives you the energy and recovery all in one and doesn't taste strong. Use a water bottle or a camel pack.
